Profile
He was a regular prizewinner on the junior solo scene whilst under the tuition of Gold Medal winner Donald McPhee. He then went on to receive further instruction from PM Roddy MacLeod MBE at the National Piping Centre. His most memorable success was winning a gold medal at the Royal National MOD in 2009.
He started as member of his local pipe band as well as studying a weekly course at the RSAMD junior academy. At age 14, he joined ‘The National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland’ and has performed onstage with some of the biggest names in traditional music such as Carlos Nunez, Phil Cunningham, Brian McNeill and Fred Morrison. His biggest influence is his cousin Phil Smillie, who is an original member of the folk trailblazers. He is also influenced by the piping of Gordon Duncan and Fred Morrison as well as bands such as ‘Moving Hearts’ and ‘Capercaillie’
He has since toured extensively across Europe, Asia, Australia and North America, headlining festivals and performing to thousands. He performed on their acclaimed CD ‘Music for the Kilted Generation’ and the band were named ‘Live Act of the Year ‘in 2011 at the Scots Trad Music Awards.
